Outside Westminster – Tower Hamlets and Norwich

Nick Clegg, Leader of the Liberal Democrats continued his Outside Westminster tour across the UK, visiting Rich Mix in Tower Hamlets and the Hewett School in Norwich.

Tower Hamlets
0945 Nick Clegg arrives at the Rich Mix music and arts centre, a social enterprise and community arts initiative in Tower Hamlets. Nick is met by Leanne Harris-Collins an 18 year old apprentice who is studying for a Creative and Media apprenticeship and Ajmal Masroor, PPC for Bethnal Green and Bow.

Leanne explains the idea behind the Rich Mix Graffiti wall opposite the centre, showing how it created a place for talented graffiti artists to express themselves.

Nick was then introduced to Sacha Corcoran, Deputy Director for Partnerships & Innovation, Joel Wynn, Leanne’s Tutor and Arts coordinator, Kirsty Webb-Wood, Director of Learner Engagement and Pawlet Brookes, Chief Executive of Rich Mix. Nick discusses the apprenticeship scheme created at Rich Mix and how Leanne is both studying and working at the centre to seek a career in creative and media management. They also discuss vocational training and work at the centre and throughout City and Islington College who facilitate the initiative.

Nick was then shown a Polish Art and Music Exhibition in the centre to see one of the projects happening within the centre. He listened to an art/music display called the Fertilizer Festival postcard exhibition which displayed CDs disguised as art to hide the distribution of music in communist Poland.

Norwich

Nick takes questions in a Question and Answer session with the school’s sixth formers in the school library.

Nick is met by a group of young students who have been taking part in the school’s Environmental Group. Nick helps promote the group by joining the students in planting a cherry tree in the school grounds.
